Agnes passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at CHI St. Alexius Health, Dickinson.
Agnes Anna Smith was born on June 11, 1928 in Dickinson, ND, to Louis and Anna (Schmidt) Huschka. She grew up on the family farm between Belfield and South Heart. After attending Perry country school, Agnes worked for various families in the area. It was during this time that she met Ned Smith and the two were married on September 29, 1948 at St. Bernards in Belfield. The couple lived on the family farm for several years before moving into Dickinson. It was here they raised their family of six children, Juleen, Edna, Dale, Karen, Dennis, and Gery. Over the years Agnes worked as a cook at St. Anthony’s Club, St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Schools. She also provided child care in her home.

Agnes loved being around people and socializing, but she especially loved children and always made time for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a self-taught seamstress that allowed her to complete many sewing projects. Agnes will be remembered as a great gardener who loved flowers, a phenomenal cook, and a meticulous housekeeper. She was a life member of St. Anthony’s Club, St. Ann’s Auxiliary and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The Holy Rosary was very important to Agnes and she passed on this prayer to her children on every family trip back from Belfield. There is no way to adequately summarize 92 years of life in such a short period of time, but know that Agnes lived it to the fullest, and she did it all without ever driving a car.

Agnes’ family would like to thank the staff of CHI St. Alexius Dickinson, for the exceptional care they gave their mother over the last several days.

She is survived by her children; Juleen (Richard) Roszkowski; Edna (Ron) Keller; Dale (Mary) Smith, all of Dickinson; Karen Smith, Pottstown, PA; Dennis Smith (Tanna Reopelle, special friend, Fargo, ND) Peoria, AZ; Gery (Heidi) Smith, Dickinson, ND; 10 Grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Susanna Reis, Belfield, ND; Marian Metzger, Billings, MT; Catherine Roller, Dickinson, ND; Rose Wanner, Dickinson, ND; Dorothy Flueher, Bloomington, MN; Eva Hlebechuk, Belfield, ND; sisters-in-law, Bev Huschka of Bismarck, Florence Frank of Dickinson, Shirley (Roy) Heidt of Wisconsin, Gladys (Dan) Krous of Ohio, and Judy Buben of Washington.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ned; Siblings, Balbina Roller, Barbara Dorval, Mathew Huschka, Aloyouis Huschka, Martin Huschka, Peter Huschka; brother-in-law Frank (Carolyn) Smith; sister-in-law Betty (Mike) Miller; and an infant sister, Anna Huschka.
