Wayne Lee Grimestad was born March 9, 1947 in Watford City, North Dakota to Selmer and Evelyn (Fredrick) Grimestad. He attended High School in Watford City and New Town. Following graduation, Wayne enlisted with the U.S. Army, served in Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1969. After military service, he managed the family farm for a year, then worked in sales. In the early 70’s he started a long affiliation with the oil business. He began on drilling rigs in Colorado, owned and operated an oilfield rigging service during the 80’s North Dakota oil boom, moved to California where he began working as an offshore drilling safety consultant and later, with a business partner, moved to Alaska, where their company provided safety personnel for offshore drilling rigs. He finished his safety career working with a steel mill in St. Louis, MO. His latest venture was and is a trailer sales business in Mandan. Wayne was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was particularly pleased to have collected a trophy Kudu while on a 2010 hunting safari in South Africa. As a friend of his once said “Doing anything with Wayne is an adventure.”

Thank you to Wayne’s family for offering Wayne’s service on YouTube. We were grateful to have an opportunity to pay our respects.

My daughter Claire met Wayne when she was about seven years old. She was with my dad visiting Wayne in the hospital. Claire had always been very sad that she never got to meet her grandpa Gene, as he had passed away before she was born. She felt an instant connection to Wayne and called him Grandpa Wayne or Super Wayne. She thought that losing his leg made him a superhero! She loved to draw him pictures. I think Wayne‘s favorite was a picture where my dad was on the top of a tall building and Super Wayne was flying in to rescue him. I don’t think that was my dads favorite! Wayne was wonderful with my daughter, sending her Easter baskets and stuffed animals and always being very kind to her. They had a special connection. Claire is 11 now and she was heartbroken to hear of Wayne’s passing. She said to me, “Mom, I guess I was so little when I met him that I didn’t really understand. I thought we had a lot more time.” I think we all did. Claire drew this picture of what she thinks Wayne looks like in heaven. Rest In Peace, Super Wayne.

I remember Wayne as Geraldines little brother, but a special memory of him was when he was stationed at Ft. Huachuca here in Arizona, and we were living in Phoenix...he and his Buddies came for a weekend. He gave us $20.00 to keep for him so he had money to return.😎 I remember he showed us a special gift for his nieces ( Geraldine’s daughters) in his 🚗 trunk...2 beautiful leather saddles he had purchased in Mexico. They were a great family, and I so enjoyed rooming and going to school with Geraldine.❤️
